Knowing how to check your car for problems is an essential skill. Understanding what you are looking for will keep you safe on the road for much longer. You should check your tires about once a month and before and after long trips.
Checking the Tires
You can check the depth of a tire tread with a penny. The grooves in your tires should still be deep enough that Abe Lincoln’s head disappears inside the tread. If you can see it instead, your treads are too worn.
An additional visual cue may be visible wear bars. If you can see your wear bar all across your tire then they are too worn down.
Additional Safety Tips
Remember that underinflated or overinflated tires are also a risk. Take care of the air pressure or misaligned tires quickly to avoid further problems. If you do need to change your tire, remember to put the newest ones on the rear of your vehicle to aid in stability. This is especially important to ensure that you are prepared for any type of road condition.
